The Gene Therapy No One Is Talking About: San Rocco and the Cost of Silence in Sickle Cell Care

February 5, 2026

As the biotech press dissects operational delays facing Vertex Pharmaceuticals’ CRISPR-based therapy for sickle cell disease, one gene therapy program has remained conspicuously absent from mainstream coverage: San Rocco Therapeutics (formerly Errant Gene Therapy). This is a venture that TrialSite News has showcased since our full first year in 2019. That silence is notable—not because San Rocco is promotional, well-capitalized, or media-savvy, but precisely because it is none of those things.

From Bench to Bedside: Why the University of Tennessee–San Rocco Story Reframes the Gene Therapy Debate

January 14, 2026

TrialSite News has spent years documenting a quieter but consequential counter-narrative in gene therapy—one that shifts attention away from prestige approvals and toward who actually gets cured. The Cure Is Real. The Bottleneck Isn’t Scientific. So Why Is San Rocco Missing From the Story?

December 31, 2025

Two years after the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) first approvals of gene therapies for sickle cell disease, the central question is no longer whether cures are possible. It is who actually gets cured—and at what cost. That paradox sits at the center of a recent Politico investigation: spectacular science constrained by multimillion-dollar price tags, scarce treatment infrastructure, and payer bureaucracy so burdensome that many patients—especially Medicaid patients and those outside major metros—remain stuck in line.

Fetal vs Adult Hemoglobin: The Divide at the Heart of Gene Therapy

October 4, 2025

For decades, sickle cell disease has stood as one of medicine’s starkest unmet needs: one genetic mutation leading to painful crises, shortened lives, and limited treatment options. Patients with transfusion-dependent thalassemia faced a similar fate, relying on lifelong transfusions and iron chelation with no durable cure in sight. Bone marrow transplant was a hope for a few with compatible donors, but for the rest, treatment consisted of symptom management.
